The Horror Behind A Clockwork Orange

In A Clockwork Orange (1972) there is a scene where actor Malcolm McDowell has his eyes forced open by metal hooks. However, due to this scene being hard to fake, they used antique lid locks to keep his eyes open and a doctor was on the scene administering eye drops. When they were setting up the scene, one of the metal hooks sliced through his cornea and McDowell almost lost his vision. This ended with him having permanent scarring.

The doctor you see standing above McDowell in the scene is an actual doctor, hence why he was putting eyedrops in his eyes, due to McDowell not being able to keep his eyes open. He still suffered temporary blindness and was in pain during the whole scene. The eye clamps that were used were meant to be used whilst lying down but Stanley Kubrick wanted McDowell sitting up and so the clamps weren’t even being used properly.
